Who is a good candidate for teeth whitening?

Individuals with healthy teeth and gums who wish to brighten their smile can often benefit from teeth whitening treatments. Teeth whitening, however,  is not recommended for children under 16, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or those with sensitive teeth and allergies. Also, patients should have realistic expectations for the outcome of their whitening treatment, as results can vary significantly.  An in-office consultation with Dr. Bassett can help to determine if teeth whitening is right for you.

In-Office Whitening Treatment

In-office teeth whitening is the fastest way to whiten teeth. During treatment, a whitening product is applied to the teeth while the gums are covered and protected from the strong whitening agent. Results can be seen quickly- after one 30-60-minute treatment- so you can start to see a difference in your smile right away. Several appointments are sometimes needed to see the best results. There is no damage to teeth from this whitening procedure, but some people do experience a few hours of sensitivity afterward.

At-Home Whitening Treatment

Dentist-supervised at-home bleaching involves a special mouthpiece tray that your dentist will create custom to your teeth. Then, a whitening gel lower in strength then the in-office option will be placed into the mouthpiece tray, and you will wear it for as little as 30 minutes a day for about four weeks. The longer these trays are worn, the more dramatic the results.
